The Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) is a voluntary bar association with a
diverse membership of 6,700,
a staff of 10, and an annual budget of $1.8 million. It is a
leader in the legal community, promoting professionalism, a strong commitment to public
service, pro bono legal services, and inclusion and diversity in the legal profession and
justice system. BAMSL maintains a Young Lawyers Division, twelve sections, and thirtynine committees.
It is an accredited continuing legal education provider and hosts a
number of signature events each year. BAMSL communicates with its members through a
weekly e-newsletter, weekly CLE digest, individual CLE email blasts, its website, social
media, monthly St. Louis Lawyer magazine, and quarterly St. Louis Bar Journal. The St. Louis
Bar Foundation is a separately incorporated 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to improve
the administration of justice in the community through law-related education.
Primary Objectives of Position:
The Executive Director provides vision, leadership, and management relative to board
relations, external relations, strategic leadership, operations management, and
organizational development.
The Executive Director should be a visible representative of the Association.
The individual
should be knowledgeable about the organization, and able to answer any questions
addressed to the Association, or to assist the questioner in getting the answer. This person
may be the first contact many people have with the legal profession and can instantly
create an impression.
The Executive Director should have the ability to communicate
effectively with attorneys and judges, and be willing to take on responsibilities as
determined by the Board of Governors, be receptive to the needs and requests of the
officers, the Board and the members, and understand that a primary responsibility of the
Executive Director is to serve them and function so as to foster the high regard of members,
judiciary, staff, media, government officials, and public in order to advance the interests
and goals of BAMSL and the Bar Foundation.
Responsibilities & Duties:
GOVERNANCE, BOARD AND BAMSL ENTITIES
? Works with the Executive Committee, Board of Governors, Foundation Board of
Directors, Young Lawyers Division, Committees, and Practice Area Sections and
Committees to formulate short-term and long-range strategic plans and ensures
implementation of actions plans to achieve the goals and objectives.
o Provides reports and updates on conditions and operations to facilitate
effective management, as well as advises BAMSL Officers,
Board Members,
Sections, and Committees concerning BAMSL programs and policies.
o Works with staff to develop action plans to achieve goals and objectives of
the Board of Directors.
o Prepares reports, policies, and agendas for Officer and Board of Directors’
approval.
o Oversees BAMSL Board elections and staffs
Nominating Committee.
OPERATIONS
? Manages the overall operations of BAMSL.
o Responsible for Sponsorship & Sustaining Partnership Development
o Responsible for Program/Process development, review, and improvement
o Oversees Information Technology, including the management of internal
networks, BAMSL website, and other IT tools.
o Oversees all human resources administration.
? Develops operational policies and procedures relative to staff and
daily operations.
? Responsible for hiring, supervising, disciplining, and managing, all
staff. The Executive Director works closely with labor counsel to
ensure
compliance and appropriate responses and resolutions to
employment issues.
o Oversees Budget Development and Management. Works with the Treasurer,
the Budget Committee, and the Finance Committee.
? Designs and leads fundraising efforts and creation of non-dues
revenue sources of income.
o Responsible for marketing, branding, and Public
Relations, as well as the
development and maintenance of media relations.
o Oversees BAMSL facilities and buildings.
OUTREACH
? Develop and promote community programs serving those individuals impacted by
the justice system, including Motion for Kids, St. Louis
Attorneys Against Hunger,
Pro Bono initiatives, and other community outreach.
? Develop membership initiatives that enhance value, maintain membership
involvement, and support BAMSL.
? Develop programs that promote professionalism, volunteerism, pro bono legal
services, and diversity.
RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER ENTITIES
? Maintains positive relations with other legal-related entities, bar associations,
courts, government agencies, public service organizations, and
vendors to promote
BAMSL and the highest ideals of the profession.
o Cultivates relationships with members of the judiciary, ABA, the Missouri
Bar, local and special focus bars, legal services providers,
other law-related
entities, and other pertinent Bar and Executive Directors’ Associations.
o Works with the Chief Judges of area courts to promote the rule of law, the
role of courts, and the Nonpartisan Court Plan.
Qualifications:
The qualifications and skills needed for this position are as follows:
Experience: Minimum 7 to 10 years of significant budget, programmatic, promotion of
diversity, staff management and oversight experience in an executive level position.
Experience with nonprofit organizations and volunteer networks desirable, but not
mandatory.
Knowledge Of: Principles and practices of business administration; organization and
management; fiscal planning and management; Association management, structure,
operation, and volunteer leadership; cost analysis; training; and computer technology and
use.
Skills In: Organization, management, and operations; human relations; oral and written
communication; data analysis; report preparation; personnel supervision and training;
establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Ability To: Travel (in the past, 20-25%) and to work evening and weekends. Supervise staff
and coordinate volunteers who have distinct skill sets and multiple goals, ability to
successfully negotiate solutions with varying opinions.
Education, Licenses or Certificates: Four year university degree required; Advanced degree,
Master of Arts, Master of Science, or Juris Doctor not required but could be helpful.
